I’m Malaysian Chinese, born and raised in KL, Malaysia. My first language is English, although I do speak several Chinese dialects as well as Malay. I know it may sound a little odd that I’m Chinese Malaysian and yet, sound – for the most part – ‘western’ (except for the occasional colloquialisms thrown in for good measure). I guess I’m what they call a ‘banana’ – yellow on the outside, white on the inside. Bananas don’t make up the majority of the Chinese population here though (last I heard, it was something measly like 15%) … so that makes us very um, for lack of a better word … special!
